Is the service being offered by Prysmian for the detection of leaks in existing fluid filled cable networks. The biggest hazard to the environment from fluid filled cables is when they leak cable fluid. The traditional method for leak location has involved freezing the cable with Liquid Nitrogen which results in outages and excavations.

More advanced methods of leak location have been developed in the US and some of these methods were trialled in the UK during the mid 1990’s by Prysmian (then known as Pirelli), however the technology required enhancements for greater field accuracy.

The new system is brought to you by Prysmian and involves the Injection of Perfluorocarbon Tracers (PFT) into cable systems and works on the basis that when the Fluid containing the PFT leaks, then the PFT evaporates through the ground, using a very sensitive instrument, it is possible to detect the PFT and find the leak location.

Prysmian is able to call upon its research and installation expertise to offer customers the first complete solution of injection, detection and repair in the UK.
